Conventions

Honest Framing

Convention scholarship pathways

At conventions (NUVO, JUMP, Radix, Tremaine, NYCDA, LADM, PULSE, 24Seven, Adrenaline), faculty observe dancers in class and award scholarships to standouts. Here's what those scholarships actually mean — and an honest take on whether they're worth chasing.

What scholarships typically include

  • Free convention registration for the next year
  • Free registration at a specific city tour stop
  • Cash awards for choreography/training
  • Free summer intensive attendance
  • Invitations to elite faculty workshops
  • Cover model / brand ambassador opportunities
  • Title-track invitations

Major convention scholarship programs

NUVO Top Talent

NUVO's marquee scholarship program. Faculty selects top dancers across the tour. Top Talent dancers receive elevated recognition, intensive invites, and performance opportunities.

JUMP Scholarship Program

Multiple tiers awarded across the season. Faculty-selected. Includes intensive invitations and tour scholarships.

Radix Core

Radix's elite recognition program. Core dancers get special placement in featured performances and intensive access.

Tremaine Scholarship Awards

Top dancers at each tour stop recognized. Scholarships to Tremaine Performance Company, intensive invitations.

NYCDA Outstanding Dancer Award

NYCDA's signature recognition. Awards at multiple tour stops, plus the prestigious season-end Outstanding Dancer competition at NYCDA Nationals. Career-launcher for many dancers.

24Seven Title Track

24Seven awards titles at their The Dance Awards championship — Junior, Teen, Senior Title winners. Major industry recognition.

The PULSE Elite Protégé

PULSE selects Elite Protégés for elevated training and performance opportunities. Bridges convention dance to professional industry work.

The honest reality

  • Convention scholarships are HIGHLY competitive
  • Most dancers attending conventions don't earn major scholarships
  • Faculty subjectivity is real — different faculty have different preferences
  • Conventions are designed partly as scouting events for elite programs
  • Some scholarship offers come with strings attached (must register for specific events to claim)
  • The marketing appeal of "scholarship" can be misleading — sometimes it's a discount on future registration, not free money

The honest value (even without winning)

  • Elite training exposure
  • Resume credibility for college auditions
  • Recognition can lead to networking opportunities
  • Faculty connections can become long-term mentorship relationships
  • Just being in the room with industry-name faculty is the primary value

Should we chase convention scholarships?

The right approach varies by dancer. Pre-professional dancers: yes, conventions are part of the journey. Recreational dancers without pro ambitions: probably overkill. College-team-pathway dancers: helpful but not essential. Studio-comp-circuit-focused dancers: occasional conventions provide variety.
