Side by Side
Convention vs. competition
A foundational distinction many parents new to competitive dance don't catch right away. A pure competition is a performance-based judging event. A pure convention is an educational classes event. Most major dance brands run both formats over the same weekend — which can be confusing.
Pure Competition
Studios bring rehearsed routines. Routines compete in categories and divisions. Judges score, routines receive awards and placements. No classes. Examples: Showbiz, KAR, Hall of Fame, Leap, Applause.
Pure Convention
Classes only, no competition. Rare in modern dance industry. Some teacher conferences (Dance Teacher Summit) fit this model. Most "conventions" today are hybrid.
Convention + Competition Hybrid
Both classes AND competition over the same weekend. Standard format for most major brands: NUVO, JUMP, Radix, Tremaine, NYCDA, LADM, 24Seven, Adrenaline, The PULSE.
A typical competitive season
- 3–6 pure competitions (regional)
- 2–4 convention-competition hybrids
- The studio's national finals event at season's end
Studios choose their schedule based on identity, goals, and budget. Convention-heavy studios are typically pre-professional or commercial-track. Competition-only studios are typically focused on local/regional title-track or studio-team identity.
For parents new to this
When your studio says you're going to NUVO, JUMP, or Radix, expect BOTH classes AND a competition over the same weekend. Pack for both, and prepare your dancer for a long, intense few days.
