Convention age strategy

When to start, age-appropriate progression, and what each age room actually looks like at a convention.

Mini (ages 6–10)

Some conventions accept ages 6+. First exposure to large-group dance environments. Focus on FUN and exposure, not competitive results. Limit classes per day. NUVO Mini Program and Tremaine Mini Program are notable stepping stones.

Junior (ages 11–12)

Beginning of serious competitive convention attendance. 3–5 classes per day manageable. Scholarship auditions begin in earnest. Style identity starts to form. Pre-pointe ballet typically appropriate.

Teen (ages 13–15)

Full convention engagement. Multiple style classes per weekend. Active scholarship pursuit. College / pre-professional pathway considerations start. Most physically demanding age (growing bodies, intense schedules).

Senior (ages 16–19)

Pre-professional considerations dominate. College recruiting at conventions becomes important. Industry networking begins. Some begin considering professional auditions. "Last shot" at certain age-restricted scholarships.

Best advice across all ages

Conventions are physically and emotionally intense. Build in recovery time, prioritize sleep, and don't schedule competition right after a multi-day convention weekend if you can help it.
